Treasure Hunter

Treasure Hunters was done for a gaming event for one of my Roommates. The event was to make a level of a pixel base game that relates to a specific theme within 48 hours. The theme for this event was Going Deeper. I did all the art, character design, and sound design, and I work with a developer to create the level design of the game Treasure Hunter by Woodman (itch.io)

Process

Research

After finding out the theme of the event, we started to brainstorm. This was mostly a discussion of words and some potential ideas. After talking, we decide to make a game where you explore a cave and find treasure. After determining what the game would be, I chose to make a mood board to find inspiration and support the ideas we had for the game

Background and Level Design

Because We only had 48 hours to make a functional game, we had to jump right into it. I started by making the textures of the tiles that the players could walk on. Because the whole level was in a cave, I had to design the tiles and background to represent that. I use greys and dark blues for the colors, giving a dark and gloomy effect.

Character/Items/Enemy Design

Then after I got done with the art for the levels, I went to making the characters, items, and enemies for the game. When making the playable character, I wanted him to look like a person who seeks treasure, and the first person to come to my head was Indian Jones. So, I base the design on the movies, which helps me keep everything consistent. The enemies have based on animals that you will mostly find in a cave line bats, spiders, and lizards. Then once I got done with the design of the characters, enemies, and items, the only thing left was the menu and the game's sound

Main Menu and Sound

When we made the game, the only thing left was adding sound and creating the Main Menu. We decide to do the menu first. Now the menu and end credit scene show the cave entrance with the character and a treasure chest inside the entrance. We base the design on another famous pixel art game Celeste. Then came the sound; at this point, we were hitting pretty close to the 48-hour mark, so we had to go through something together and make it work, but most sounds work well with the enemies, jumping, and collecting coins.

Quick Animation

Here is a few animations of the characters, enemies, and items that I made after the event and the link to download the game. Treasure Hunter by Woodman (itch.io)
